BC’s Publicly Funded IVF Program: What We Know So Far
In February 2024, the Province of British Columbia announced the launch of a publicly funded in-vitro fertilization (IVF) program set to begin in April 2025. This program is meant to offset the costs related to assisted reproductive technologies.
This is an exciting step forward for families across BC, as the funding announcement brings hope to many who dream of building or expanding their families. As of right now, not much has been shared about the program, so we understand there are a lot of questions that remain to be answered. In the interim, the BC Ministry of Health has created a dedicated page to provide the latest updates, and we break down what we know (and don’t know) so far below.
What We Know About the IVF Program So Far
Currently, here’s what we understand about the program:
- The funding is expected to begin in April 2025 and we suspect it will cover clinic fees and medication for some IVF cycles.
- You must be eligible and enrolled in the provincial Medical Services Plan (MSP) to access the program.
What We Don’t Know (Yet) About the IVF Program
However, there are still several key details we are awaiting clarification on, including:
- Who will be eligible: there likely will be some criteria for eligibility but no details are currently known.
- How many cycles will be funded: given anticipated demand, the total number of IVF cycles that will be funded is unclear.
Based on similar programs in other provinces, we anticipate that funding may only cover a portion of the IVF cycles needed in BC each year.
- How the distribution of funded cycles will be managed, particularly given the expected high demand and limited clinic capacity.
- Whether funding will extend to support for donor sperm, donor eggs, or surrogacy.
- How to apply for the program: we don’t know the day-to-day mechanics or operations of how an individual or couple would apply to the program.
Next Steps + Looking Ahead to April 2025
We recognize this is a significant step forward for fertility care in BC, and we are committed to sharing new information as soon as it becomes available. PCRM will also continue to advocate for fair, accessible, and transparent IVF coverage for all British Columbians. If you do have any specific questions regarding the funding, please feel free to reach out to us. We will not have all the answers now, but we can do our best to answer your questions as we learn more.
Thank you for your patience as we navigate this exciting but evolving landscape - stay tuned for further updates. We will update this page as we get more information.
Because this funding is limited, we do not have any visibility on how quickly any given treatment cycle can start. If you are 38 or over, we would encourage you to not delay fertility treatments as time will negatively impact success rates. Irrespective of your age, getting the appropriate fertility investigations to begin treatment is essential.
