It is both humbling and exciting to announce the 10th anniversary of the Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine (PCRM). In the beginning, our goal was simple: to provide excellent fertility care with a patient-centric approach. What did that mean? We recognized that treatments started and ended with the patient. Having experienced lab and clinical staff would be critical to our success, but we knew that focusing on how patients experienced their fertility treatments would make all the difference. Identifying that primary goal was easy and set the tone for the years to come.
Just as the field of fertility care has evolved over the last decade, so, too, has the standard of treatment at PCRM. With advances in molecular techniques, embryos now can be screened for common chromosomal and genetic disorders. Vitrification, an improved method of cryopreservation, has revolutionized the safety of storing and thawing of embryos. Our Fertility Preservation Program, with the help of Fertile Future, has taken root and now helps dozens of patients with cancer whose treatments would leave them infertile.
To help us stay connected with our patients, we’ve kept pace with changing information technologies. This year, we upgraded our electronic medical record to one which includes a Patient Portal. The Patient Portal allows easy access to records as well as an open line of communication between patients and their care providers. The rise in social media has also been a tremendous boon for patient communication — people can “like” us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and keep tabs on day-to-day clinical questions via our website.
Quality patient care means more than just state-of-the-art technologies, though. In the clinic, we strive to provide a calm and peaceful environment for couples. We place a high value on a positive work environment, too. From the start, we recognized that the wellness of patients is directly affected by the wellness of our staff. We now boast a roster of 50 employees, all dedicated to the vital goal of patient-centric care.
We wish we could say that all of our patients have achieved the miraculous goal of creating a family. Not all couples have been lucky; the struggle to become parents through assisted reproductive technologies have taken many on a different journey. We stand proudly with them, as we do those who had happier outcomes. How special to know that among us now are hundreds of children we knew as embryos.
